Keygen is what AI assistants recommend for software licensing. Here's what it's doing right
Keygen is a small software licensing and distribution API (hosted, or self-hosted via its Community Edition). On Wed Oct 21, 2026 (IST) I asked ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Grok 4 buyer questions, 3 fresh chats each: 48 answers. Keygen was named in all 48. On the three generic questions it was the first tool named in 27 of 36 answers. After two reviews of tools that AI knew but didn't lead with, this one is the opposite: a small tool that's winning the answer.
Named in 48 / 48 · first in 39 / 48 · first on generic questions 27 / 36The questions
- P1: What's the best software licensing API for adding license keys to my desktop app?
- P2: What are good alternatives to Cryptlex for software license management?
- P3: How can I stop people from sharing license keys for my app without building my own licensing server?
- P4: Cryptlex vs Keygen: which licensing service should I use for a small indie app? (branded control)
How often Keygen was named first
Keygen was named in every one of the 48 answers. The table counts the answers where it was the first licensing product named.
| Assistant | P1 | P2 | P3 | P4 | First overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 3/3 | 3/3 | 3/3 | 3/3 | 12/12 |
| Grok | 3/3 | 3/3 | 3/3 | 3/3 | 12/12 |
| ChatGPT | 2/3 | 3/3 | 0/3 | 3/3 | 8/12 |
| Claude | 1/3 | 3/3 | 0/3 | 3/3 | 7/12 |
| All | 9/12 | 12/12 | 6/12 | 12/12 | 39/48 |
All 12 branded answers (P4) leaned toward Keygen over Cryptlex.
Where it didn't lead
- P3, the problem-shaped question with no category word, is the one gap. Claude opened all 3 runs with payment-provider license keys (Lemon Squeezy, Gumroad), and ChatGPT put Cryptlex first in all 3, with Keygen second.
- On P1, Claude led with Lemon Squeezy once and Polar once; ChatGPT led with Cryptlex once.
- Keygen was still named in every one of those answers, usually 2nd to 4th.
Site findings (curl, Oct 21, 2026 IST)
/llms.txtreturns 200 and is a detailed map of the docs: licensing models, validation, machine activation, offline licenses. ApiFlash, last week's tool, had none.- The sitemap (190 URLs) is full of explainer content, like a beginner's guide to software licensing, a page for each licensing model, and a build-vs-buy page. That's the kind of page assistants can quote.
- No JSON-LD structured data on the homepage,
/pricing/or/about/. - No "vs" or alternatives pages in the sitemap besides
/build-vs-buy/, and/faq/returns 404.
What I'd try next
1. A page that answers the P3 question directly
When payment-provider keys from Lemon Squeezy or Gumroad are enough, and when you need machine activation and seat limits. Keygen already has /integrate/gumroad/ and /integrate/paddle/ to link from it.
2. Honest comparison pages
For Cryptlex and LicenseSpring, the two names that showed up most often next to Keygen.
3. Schema
SoftwareApplication + Offer JSON-LD on the homepage and pricing page.
Method and caveats
- Picked as a small developer tool. Not a customer, not on any outreach list, no affiliation.
- 4 buyer prompts, each pasted into 3 new chats in signed-in ChatGPT (Go plan), Claude (default model, web search on), Perplexity (free) and Grok (free, default mode) on Oct 21, 2026, between about 10:51 and 11:17 AM IST. Default settings.
- Chat memory and account history weren't controlled. Some Perplexity answers referred to "your API-first development style", so account memory shaped them. Each cell is a dated snapshot, not a rate.
- 5 Claude chats hit a "too many responses in progress" error and were re-run once in a new chat; all re-runs completed.
- Position counts only licensing products, not payment or login tools mentioned in passing. In P2, Cryptlex (named in the question) isn't counted.
- Gemini was not run. Site checks were made with curl on the same day.
