AI assistants name ApiFlash often, but almost never first

ApiFlash is a small screenshot API (Chrome on AWS Lambda, running since 2017). On Oct 14, 2026 (IST) I asked ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Grok 4 buyer questions, 3 fresh chats each: 48 answers. ApiFlash was named in 37 of them. On the three generic questions it was the first tool named in 0 of 36 answers. ScreenshotOne led nearly all of them, and ApiFlash showed up as the cheaper or simpler option.

The questions

  • P1: What's the best screenshot API for capturing website screenshots from my web app?
  • P2: What are good alternatives to Urlbox for a website screenshot API?
  • P3: How can I generate screenshots of web pages on my server without running and maintaining headless Chrome myself?
  • P4: ScreenshotOne vs ApiFlash: which screenshot API should I use for a small SaaS?

Where it showed up

  • Generic questions (P1–P3): first in 0 of 36. When named, usually #2 or #3 (lower on some runs, e.g. #8 of 11 once on Claude, #4–#5 on several ChatGPT runs), described as "cheap", "simple", "budget" or "lowest cost".
  • Claude and Grok named it every time. Perplexity named it on "best screenshot API" but not once on the Urlbox-alternatives or no-headless-Chrome questions. ChatGPT left it out of all 3 no-headless-Chrome answers.
  • Head-to-head (P4): mentioned first in 10 of 12. Claude leaned ApiFlash for cost on all 3 runs. Elsewhere it was split: Grok called it the default pick twice and the runner-up once; ChatGPT recommended it once, called it the budget pick once, and defaulted to ScreenshotOne once; Perplexity framed it as the cheaper or cost-first choice, though one run still leaned ScreenshotOne at the end.

What it means: the assistants know ApiFlash and agree on what it is, the cheap, simple option. They just don't lead with it when a buyer asks a generic question.

Site findings (curl, Oct 14, 2026 IST)

  • Homepage 200; title "Screenshot API for Developers | ApiFlash". No application/ld+json on the homepage.
  • /llms.txt returns 404. ScreenshotOne (checked the same day) has /llms.txt, /ai-information/ and comparison pages.
  • Sitemap has 19 URLs (docs, guides, FAQ, about, legal). No vs / alternative / comparison URLs.
  • /pricing returns 404; pricing is a homepage section (/#pricing).

What I'd fix first

1. Honest comparison pages

ScreenshotOne and Urlbox pages that say when ApiFlash is the better pick and when it isn't. The assistants already use a cost frame; ApiFlash should own the page that backs it.

2. An /llms.txt

Same one-line pitch as the homepage: simple URL-to-image screenshot API, Chrome on Lambda, pricing shape.

3. Schema and a real pricing URL

SoftwareApplication + Offer JSON-LD on the homepage, and a /pricing page that doesn't 404.

Method and caveats

  • Picked as a small founder-run screenshot API. Not a customer, not on any outreach list, no affiliation.
  • Each question run 3 times in fresh chats per assistant on Oct 14, 2026 (IST). Gemini was not run.
  • Claude: Pro plan, web search on, ~11:12–11:26 AM IST. Perplexity: Free plan, default mode; P1 in the morning, P2–P4 ~2:45–3:00 PM IST. Grok and ChatGPT: ~2:45–3:00 PM IST. ChatGPT's morning attempts all failed to load and aren't counted.
  • Position = order of first mention. For P2, Urlbox (named in the question) isn't counted in the position.
  • Chat memory not controlled. 3 runs per cell is a snapshot, not a rate. Prices in answers are what the assistants said, not quotes from ApiFlash.
